Elon and Sam Altman just.. agreed?

i understand why Dario wants to slow AI down.

and i still want the most powerful fucking model now.

so i was conflicted af while reading his essay, We Must Pace the Frontier.

i’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars on AI over the last few years. i’ve used it to build my software company. when ChatGPT came out the year after i graduated from law school, i couldn’t stop thinking about how much time it could have saved me.

so i’m hardly watching this from the sidelines. i love using this stuff. every better model makes me want to get my hands on it.

then the people building those models start saying we should slow down.

Dario’s proposal has three steps:

  1. give outside evaluators ongoing access inside AI companies;
  2. coordinate safety standards and limits among companies in democratic countries;
  3. try to reach wider agreements between governments.

Sam Altman’s response is huge because he said OpenAI would also give independent evaluators employee-like access.

i went through the passages in the video, including the repeated references to one or two years, and gave my take on what they might mean. i’m still torn. i understand the concern. i also know how impatient i get waiting for the next model..
